Who We Are

APLI (Association of Professional Language Interpreters) is a not-for-profit organization for all qualified and trained interpreters in Canada.  APLI is dedicated to improving the profession for all language interpreters, creating a shared environment to support and minimize work-related issues, and servicing users and service providers.

At APLI, we have a wide range of interpreters with different skills and qualifications.  You can easily filter by Language and Credentials (https://aplicanada.org/interpreters/) to find the right interpreter for your needs.

APLI does not contract with its member interpreters to provide freelance interpretation services.  Clients who require individual interpreter services from our members are free to contact and engage them in a contract for services on a freelance and individual basis.

Contract/Agreement fees are defined by each member for their services.

The fees, terms or conditions of the freelance contract or agreement are outside the scope and concern of APLI, and APLI will not be a party to any dispute or challenge arising out of a freelance relationship.  APLI accepts no liability for any freelance contract or agreement between the client and individual APLI members.

We do recommend that a minimum of $50 per hour be considered as the rate for our members for a two or three-hour booking.  Higher fees or packages are expected for work that requires more complex skills and experience offered by

  • Ministry of Attorney General (MAG) accredited court interpreters,
  • Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) accredited interpreters,
  • Ontario Council on Community Interpreting (OCCI) accredited community interpreters with medical/legal specializations, and
  • Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) certified court/medical/community/conference interpreters.

Why should I join APLI?

APLI is the only association composed solely of interpreters, with the best interests of interpreters as a goal. We understand most interpreters work as freelancers, and one great way to maximize working opportunities is to have your name on our member roster. We also offer workshops at an absolute minimum cost so everyone can participate in professional development opportunities.

It’s quite simple. Follow this link to see our membership requirements.

How much does an annual membership cost?

The annual membership fee for the first year is $40.00 and the renewal fee is $30.00 per year after that. The preferred method of payment is e-transfer to aplicanada@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can mail a cheque payable to APLI to:

Where do interpreters work?

Community interpreters work when there is a language barrier wherever a service needs to be provided. Areas of work include healthcare, social services, legal and other settings. Usually, community interpreters work on a freelance basis, contracted by interpreting agencies.

Court interpreters work under the Ministry of the Attorney General at the various courthouses or wherever a court interpreter is needed. This is also true for Immigration and Refugee Board interpreters.

Are there resources for community interpreters, such as a language-specific glossary of terms frequently utilized in our profession?

Yes of course, this is something we are always working on and adding to. Check out our current resources here.
